Stanford's compute power gets boost from PlayStation 3 Stanford University's Folding@home distributed computing project has seen its capacity more than double in the last month, thanks to the addition of idle processor cycles from hundreds of thousands of PlayStation 3 consoles. Total computing power of the system is now at around 700TFLOPS (trillion floating-point operations per second), with nearly 400TFLOPS of that coming from roughly 250,000 PlayStation 3 consoles, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said Wednesday.

On controls, this is Epic, and it should be a proper port of a game largely built on PC then optimized for 360. Controls should be fully remappable, and also remember anything with the GFW logo, Live-enabled or not, is required to support the 360 gamepad, so at worst you'd need to spend the ~$20 at Target to get the 360 PC wireless USB adapter - then you'd be able to control GoW PC exactly as you play now on 360. It's a viable option for those more comfortable with the pad. 360 optimizations include using assets tailored to 512MB total RAM and no HDD. There are always advantages and disads to a fixed hardware target, and there's no question that 2GB system RAM plus a 512MB videocard can be better than the 360, at least in some ways. Sweeney, Butcher and a few other tech heavyweights lobbied hard during 360's design phase to keep a HDD standard on all 360s, but MS decided to offer the Core SKU anyway- the HDD was the biggest single money-losing part in the original 'Box. So you wind up not having a hard disk to cache to as all games have to run on Core as well as Premium...
Fast Standing Still: SanDisk Ducati Edition Flash Drives Look Fast, Cool SanDisk teamed up with high-end Ducati motorcycles to pimp the raw speed of its latest flash memory drives and cards, and today rolled out some way cool-looking $124.99 USB flash drives that look like the gas tank on a Ducati motorcycle. They're also quick, at 20MBps read/ write speeds, have a 4GB capacity and include a lanyard so you can look like a tool wearing a flash drive around your neck as if it were jewelry. The company also rolled out some even faster flash cards, too. The company showed its latest SanDisk Extreme, 4GB ($164.99) and 8GB ($314.99) Compact Flash cards with 45MBps read/write speeds. They're able to withstand extreme temperatures, from -13°F to 185°F, and the company also says they're more rugged with silicon sealed internals, and also come with a fancy-schmancy case. SanDisk also showed its SD Plus cards, with a USB plug inside so you won't need a reader. That drive is also capable of a speedy 20MB/sec. transfer rate. Source link
