Based on radio frequency identification technology (RFID), this research established an information system for the supervision and management of the inspection and quarantine of live pigs transported to Hong Kong(HK), in which screening and optimization of critical technical parameters and equipment of the system, as well as evaluation of the effect in a preliminary trial were done. Covering the overall management of live pigs from feeding, disease prevention, control of drug residues, inspection and quarantine before transport to import inspection by HK，the system built up a convenient and highly information-based approach to control the health and safety of live pigs transported to HK and to trace the source of any problem. The test results showed that the system was fully functional, stable and easy to use. The RFID eartags not only could completely replace the current official tattoos of live pigs transported to HK, but also the system could significantly improve the supervision level of the health and safety of live pigs transported to HK.
