¡@ Le Jardin des Délices Preface to a Dream by Chen Mei-O Founder and Artistic Director of the Han-Tang Yuefu ¡@ Baroque music originated in France during the Renaissance in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when the French court promoted a brand of rich, lush music in the European tradition. It declined for a time during the French Revolution, but later , when President De Gaulle proclaimed ¡§If we are to revive France, we must first revive the tradition of French music,¡¨ Baroque music once again became the darling of the academic and musical worlds, as specialists enthusiastically took up the work of researching and editing music, as well as the training of musicians, dancers and actors in an effort to revive the classical splendor of the Baroque. Li-yuan music and dance began at the Chinese court of the T¡¦ang Dynasty (618-907). At that time, because the multi-talented emperor Hsüan-tsung considered the ancient ¡§Ch¡¦ing-yüeh¡¨ style the music of his most distant ancestor (Lau-tzu), court artists drew on poetry, song, music and dance to create an atmosphere of great artistic creativity that resulted in the formation of the Li-yuan style. By the Sung Dynasty (960-1279), Li-yuan had become an established artistic style admired at court and in the countryside, and shared by refined and popular alike. Li-yuan spread with the expanding Sung empire and took root in Fukien. Later, it followed Fukien immigrants to Taiwan where Li-yuan songs remain popular among the people to this day. In May of 1996, following on the spectacularly successful introduction the previous year of the classic ¡§ Yangexing --Li-yuan music and dance¡¨ of the Li-yuan Dance Studio founded by the Han-Tang Yuefu Ensemble, the piece was performed once again by popular demand at the Han-Tang Yuefu Center for Performing Arts. Chen Cheer invited Mireille Larroche, Artistic Director of the Paris La Périch Opera troupe, whose enthusiastic response to the performance sowed the seeds of a future project. In 1999, the Han-Tang Yuefu Ensemble went on a tour of Europe and introduced the Li-yuan style to a European audience.
